What do I mean by “it,” exactly? Everything. That’s right. ALL OF IT.
Trust me, I know all about powering through and trying to do #allthethings. I’ve done it a lot myself, and will no doubt continue to do so in the future.
Even small breaks, like 5 minutes with your phone and a cup of tea, can have huge impacts on your mood.
Why your mood matters
Sophie von Stumm is a senior lecturer in psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London. As she told Fast Company,
“A large body of empirical evidence has shown that negative affect-–depressed and anxious mood–-is associated with reduced cognitive performance and lower cognitive flexibility.”
Boosting your mood isn’t selfish at all. In fact, it can lead to better job performance.

You know you’re gonna spend time goofing off on your phone anyway. Why not improve your mood instead of reading stuff that makes you sad, angry, or agitated? When you work for yourself, it’s easy to convince the boss that this is a good productivity booster. Your mileage may vary with external supervisors, of course.
Also: It doesn’t have to be bunnies. You do you. Maybe you like cats, or endangered birds, or origami, or cooking. It’s all good. Just stick to the things that make you happy and you can’t go wrong.
